Bettie Mae Wright

February 22, 1949 — June 24, 2023

Bastrop

Bettie Mae Wright, 74, of Bastrop, TX, passed away on June 24, 2023, in Houston, TX, after complications from her surgery.

Bettie, or better known as “Grannie Bettie, Aunt Grannie Bettie, or Cousin Bettie” was born on February 22, 1949, to parents James Elton Abel and Bobbie May Keller Abel in Wellington, TX. Growing up she attended Borger High School where she met the love of her life, Ray Wright. Their love was certain, and they joined in marriage on May 13, 1966, and later were blessed with their three sons: David, Donnie, and Daniel.

Bettie was a true jack of all trades!  She was the owner of Wright’s Cake and Candy Supply; a professional wallpaper installer; a professional chef; a college cake decorating instructor; but most importantly, she was an amazing and loving wife, mother to her children, and grannie to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Bettie loved spending time with her grandkids and helping others as often as possible. She also loved to travel, and her favorite spot was her cabin in Red River, NM.  If you couldn’t find Bettie organizing her garage or pulling weeds out in the yard, she was probably fine tuning a scrapbook or working a puzzle! She was also great at any game or sport she tried and finished each time as the “Grand National Champion”. Though, her proudest achievement was receiving the Greatest Wife/Mother/Grannie of the Year Award!

Bettie is reunited in Heaven with her parents James Elton Abel and Bobbie May Keller Abel.

To cherish her memories is the love of her life, Ray Neill Wright after 57 years and one month of unconditional love; her sons: David and wife Corina, Donnie and wife Melissa, Daniel and wife Misty; her grandchildren; Erin Wright, Georgia Stocker, Breanna Wright, Braydon Wright, Luke Wright, Nicole Wright, Colt Wright and Coy Wright. Her great grandchildren; Addy Wright, Rowan Wright, Westyn Stocker, and Parker Stocker; her siblings; Bob Abel, June Jordan and Jimmy Abel; and her niece, who was like a daughter to her, Donna Hertel. Also, to treasure her memories are the countless friends she has made over the past 74 years. As we all know, Bettie never met a stranger!

Bettie led a life that created a bright light in this world. She had an incredible, lasting impact on each person who had the pleasure of knowing her. Her spirit and outlook on life were best exhibited through her sweet words of counsel, “you can either be bitter or better”.  Bettie always chose to be better!
