James S. "Jim" Hoffman

James Stevens Hoffman, affectionately know as Jim, Lt., and Papa cop, passed away January 21, 2025 at the age of 78. He was born October 25, 1946 in Bastrop, Texas to Arthur M “Teddy” Hoffman and Naomi (Harris) Hoffman.

Jim lived most of his life in Smithville, Texas. He attended Smithville High School and graduated with the class of 1965. In 1966 joined the United States Army and served honorably through 1971. He then transitioned to the United States Airforce. He served his Country until his retirement from the Air Force in 1988. He took a little break but was not ready for retirement. In 1990 he joined the ranks of the Bastrop County Sherriff’s Department. He again served through to a second retirement in 2012.

Jim married his high-school sweetheart, Barbara Griesenbeck Hoffman in 1967. They remained together until their divorce in 1997. In 1998 he married the love of his life, Pam Hatfield. Jim and Pam were together until his passing.

Jim will be remembered fondly for his service to his Country and Community and his passion and love for all sports.

Jim is preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by the love of his life, his wife, Pam Hoffman; son, Shane Christopher Hoffman of Smithville, Texas; daughter, Celeste Talene (Hoffman) Hirsch of Rosanky, Texas; Step-son, Skeeter Ray Rucker of Bastrop, Texas; Brothers, Bobby Ray Hoffman of Giddings, Texas, William Dale Hoffman of Madisonville, Kentucky; sisters, Judith Ann Arciva of Port Arthur, Texas, Janet Gayle Henneman of Del Valle, Texas; seven grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Jim's life will be held April 12, 2025 at Marrs Jones Newby Funeral Home. 

Family and Friends will gather from 11am to 1:00pm and the Celebration of Jim's life will begin at 1:00pm
