John David Waits, age 78, of Bastrop, Texas passed away on Monday, December 16, 2024.

He was born on February 21, 1946, in Houston, Texas as the only child of John and Wanda Waits. The son of a colorful “short order” cook, he was nicknamed “Cookie” – a term of endearment by which he was known by his parents, uncles, aunts and cousins during his youth (and beyond), but was known as “J.D.” after he left home. He enlisted in the Navy right out of high school in 1964 where he served proudly for 30 years. He fell in love with, and married Mary Lou Waits (Twice! – it’s tough to be married to a sailor!) He worked his way through the ranks, and around the world, until he retired from the U.S. Navy as Lieutenant Commander (LCDR) in 1994.

He was a loving Husband and was always proud of his family. He raced sail boats and loved to play golf. A restless and curious man, he pursued more education and careers after the Navy. He worked maintenance in California, managed airport parking in Houston and Virginia, then finished his second career as a Safety Manager for a large Mechanical Contractor in Austin.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Lou Waits of Bastrop TX, many brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his mother, father, mother-in-law, father-in-law, brother-in-law and sister-in-law.

In accordance with his wishes, his remains will be buried at sea by the U.S. Navy off the coast near San Diego where J.D. (Cookie) and Mary Lou lived for many years.

The family will celebrate JD's life privately at a later date.
