Josephine Mae Headen, 92, of Bastrop Texas died Monday, September 17, 2024, at St David’s Hospital due to complications following a stroke.
Mae was born on December 7, 1931, in Franklin New Hampshire to William Henry Hustus and Josephine Estella Stroheker.
Upon turning 18, she joined the US Army as a cryptographic specialist in Chicago, Illinois where she married her first husband, Charles O. Freeland and started her family. Mae moved to Connecticut where she raised 5 children. She retired from the State of Connecticut as a chef. After the death of her first husband, Mae moved to Bastrop, Texas and a short time later married her second husband, Samuel Headen in Bastrop, Texas.
She enjoyed her “TOPS” meetings with friends. Mae crocheted blankets for all of her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She loved time spent with family and friends and her cherished dogs. Mae was known for giving the biggest and best bear hugs.
Mae is preceded in death by her first husband Charles O. Freeland Sr. and second husband Samuel Headen, sons George Freeland and Richard Freeland, her brother William Hustus and sister Joyce Boudreau.
Mae is survived by her sons, Robert Freeland and wife Tina, Charles Freeland Jr and wife Brenda, and Edward Freeland as well as many grandchildren and great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Services to celebrate the life of Josephine Mae Headen will be Monday, September 23, 2024 at Marrs Jones Newby Funeral Home in Bastrop, Texas. Visitation will begin at 10:00am and the service will begin at 11:00am. Graveside will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery near McDade, Texas.
