Our community sadly lost a true pioneer on Friday October 15th, 2021 when Lawrence Hernandez Sr. favorably known as “Lencho”, who passed away from natural health conditions at The Department of Veterans Affairs hospital in Temple, Tx.
His contributions to the lives of many include standing on the front lines alongside the late Cesar Chavez, marching in Austin, Tx. To what would be a blueprint for equal rights in the workforce community. Moreover, years of consistent groundwork would lead up to a strong role with the AFL-CIO as a union organizer. Uniquely, he would build a legendary reputation that would draw the attention of unions nationwide. Not to mention, taking the position as President of the United steelworkers of America and allied service workers union in Chicago, IL. As a result, he would successfully lead a strong workforce for many years to come.
Lencho lives on through the loving community of Bastrop, by way of Austin, Tx. Particularly by, his wife of 32 years Mrs. Josefina Villasenor Hernandez, their children Alex, Martha, April, Mario, Becky and Lizzy. Along with their husbands, wives, and many children. Likewise, Mr. Hernandez is also survived by his brothers Carlos Hernandez Jr., Genaro Sr. and three sisters, Mary, Becky and Antonia which also includes their spouses and many children.
In essence, he is welcomed in heaven by his parents Mr. and Mrs. Carlos Hernandez Sr. and two brothers Leo and Louis. Followed by his youngest son Lawrence “Lencho” Hernandez Jr. as well as one Grandson Scottie Duke Villasenor.
Furthermore, his legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of everyone he interacted with as well as those he reached but never met. He give’s volume to the phrase “may the work I’ve done, speak for me.”
