Maria Luisa Castillo Varela was called home by her Lord and Savior on October 26, 2023, surrounded by her loving daughters. Maria fought breast cancer bravely for over 20 years. As she always said, “Cancer will have to fight me every step of the way.” It was that attitude, along with her faith, spirituality, never ending positivity, kindness, and love, that drew countless friends, family, and co-workers to her. She was a mother and friend to all, and will be missed so very much.
Maria was born on April 6, 1949, in Bastrop County, Texas, to Maria Luisa Aguilar Castillo and Gregorio Perez Castillo. She was a graduate of Bastrop High School and attended Austin Community College. Maria devoted her career to public service and worked for Austin ISD, Texas Department of Public Safety, and the City of Austin, where she worked for 38 years. However, retirement couldn’t slow her down. Maria also enjoyed her time working for the Law Office of Stewart Rojo as an administrative assistant. Although Maria took pride in her work, her life’s joy came from her daughters. They had a bond like no other and were truly the best of friends. They enjoyed long drives, picnics, and making lifelong memories while preparing meals for friends and family.
Maria truly exemplified what unconditional love is. She supported, encouraged, and celebrated wholeheartedly. She truly set the example for all around her. Maria lived for Our Lord and Savior and embraced everyday the Lord gave her.
Maria is proceeded in death by her parents; her sister Esperanza Castillo; her sister Jesusa Castillo; and her brothers John and Edward Castillo. She is survived by her daughters, Tina Varela (Jimmy Castro) of Austin; Susana Varela of Austin, and Hector Falcon of Austin, whom she considered a son. She also leaves behind a very special feline JJ her grandfur baby. She is also survived by her sisters, Susana Castillo and Lupe Castillo of Bastrop; one brother Carmen Castillo, also of Bastrop; along with several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, whom she adored.
