Martha Lou Weatherford went on to be her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on September 8, 2024 at the age of 86. A funeral service will be held at Marrs-Jones-Newby Funeral Home in Bastrop on September 21st. Visitation will start 9am. At 11am there will be short service at the funeral home and then burial at Fairview Cemetery on Hwy 95 N.
Martha Lou lived a full and productive life in spite of suffering brain damage when she was born in Granger, TX on July 18, 1938. She was a long-time avid supporter of the televised 24-hour-fundraiser Telethon hosted by Jerry Lewis for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. She never missed watching it as long it was held.
She was able to do the basic tasks of homemaking until her mother ‘s health worsened to the point they both moved to Towers Nursing Home in Smithville. After her mother passed away at age 104, Martha Lou returned to Bastrop where she lived until her death at age 86.
Martha Lou was a faithful member of First Baptist Church Bastrop and, even though she was unable to attend during the latter months of her life, she still has many wonderful friends there. She was a staunch supporter of the Texas Longhorns evidenced by signed memorabilia. She loved listening to LP Records and treasured her collection. Thanks to John Alexander who digitalized her albums and set them on a timer so she could listen to them even though she had lost the eye-hand coordination to put them on the turntable and set the needle. John and his wife Sharon also drove her to First Baptist for many years.
The family would like to thank Magnolia Hospice-especially Julie Price and Elvis Jaime, Ronnie Gaines with Bluebonnet Health Care and Windsor Nursing and Rehabilitation Facility at 400 Old Austin Hwy. There are others who have gone beyond their duties to serve Martha Lou with care and love. They are Linda Bingley, Susan Clark, Brandon Esters, Lori Greer, Jennifer Lemming and Vonda Rosenburg. Tammy Taylor is special not only to Martha Lou, but to many family members. Tammy did private nursing duty for Martha Lou’s cousin, Margaret and her husband Clay Collier before their deaths. Tammy would take Martha Lou on shopping trips to HEB and Wal-Mart and excursions to the cemetery to visit her Mother’s grave and later her brother’s.
Preceding Martha Lou in death were her father Earl Herbert Weatherford, Sr., her Mother Mary Sydney Hunter Weatherford, and her brother Earl Herbert Weatherford. Survivors include her niece Tracy Weatherford Wright (Richard,) her Great Nephews Elian Weatherford and Elliott Ugalde, Great-great niece, Magnolia Malcolm-Layman all of Oregon, her nephew Earl Herbert Weatherford, Jr. (Deborah) and great nephew Bodhi of Los Angeles CA and too many cousins and friends to name.
Pall Bearers are cousins Bobby Long, Joshua Long, Trey Long, Matthew Wilson, Chris Herrick, and nephew Richard Wright. Honorary Pall Bearers are cousins Jeremy Wilson, Levi Long and long-time friend John Alexander,
In lieu of flowers, it is the family’s request that any memorial donations you might be wanting to make would go to either First Baptist Church of Bastrop or Magnolia Hospice in Austin.
Rev. Bob Long will officiate.
