Mary Welsch

Mary Lee (Martin) Welsch, 92, died peacefully at New Haven Assisted Living of Bastrop, Texas on July 29, 2021.

Mary Lee was born in the family home of Yancey, Texas on February 19, 1929, to Ed and Cleo (Homesly) Martin and was the oldest of 4 children. Mary Lee helped raise her three brothers along with attending school in Yancey, Texas, graduating Salutatorian in her class from Yancey High School in 1947.

After graduation from high school, Mary attended business school in San Antonio, Texas. Upon completion of school, Mary started her career in San Antonio working at multiple local businesses such as an appliance store and the San Antonio School District.

Mary met her soon-to-be husband, Virgil W. (Bill) Welsch, through mutual friends on the Hermann Sons rooftop in 1956 in New Braunfels, Texas. The couple made it official about 6 months after they met and married at the First United Methodist Church of Yancey, Texas on January 24, 1957. Bill and Mary resided in New Braunfels for 7 years then moved to Bastrop, Texas for Bill’s job at the new L.C.R.A. Sim Gideon power plant because he was highly respected and a great employee. They started their family by adopting and raising Colleen with Monica to follow a few years later. Virgil and Mary were great parents to Colleen and Monica and were involved in the Bastrop First United Methodist Church, celebrated many birthdays, band and dance performances, and Mary sewed many outfits for school. Mary continued her career in Bastrop as the secretary for the First United Methodist Church just down the road from their house in downtown Bastrop.

Mary was a loving wife, mother, Oma, and Christian within the Bastrop Community. After retirement in 1994, Mary took great joy with an active church life in the Methodist Church, many game nights at the senior center, and took many trips around the U.S with the First National Bank and the Senior Center. In her spare time, she enjoyed reading, sewing, and later spending time with her only granddaughter, Haley Ellis.

Mary was well respected, independent, strong-willed, kind, and was loved by all who knew her. She has touched many lives and she will be greatly missed.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil (Bill); her parents, Ed and Cleo Martin; and her three brothers, Oliver, Fred, and Homer Martin.

Mary is survived by Colleen (Welsch) Ellis, Chris Ellis, and Monica Welsch; one granddaughter Haley Ellis; one sister-in-law Janice (Martin) Geyer, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Visitation will be at 10 and Funeral services will be held at 11 am on Tuesday, August 2nd at Marrs-Jones-Newby Funeral Home, 505 Old Austin Hwy., Bastrop, Texas 78602 with Rev. Richard Leggett officiating. The burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Bastrop, Texas.
