Mary Sue Akin of Bastrop, Tx., passed away on May 19, 2021, at the age of 98. She was born on June 17, 1922 in West Point, Georgia but grew up in Alabama. She moved to Austin in 1968.
Sue was a longtime member and Sunday School Teacher at Crestview Baptist Church in Austin. She was a real estate broker for many years. While living in Alabama, she worked
almost 20 years for the CV Railroad ending up as assistant to the president of the railroad. She left that job for the opportunity to marry James W. Akin and raise 3 wonderful sons. The boys
helped her learn to cook.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years, James W. Akin, Jr.; son, Carl Wayne Akin; parents, Mattie and L.D. McGhee, Sr.; brother, L.D. McGhee, Jr.; and sister, Shirley M. Dean.
She is survived by sons, Thomas E. Akin and Valinda Jacobs of Cedar Creek, James Akin and wife Bonnie of Raleigh, NC; grandchildren, Linda Sue Akin, Ellen Martinez, Sharon Atkinson, Mallory Akin, Amiee Tucker; 7 great-grandchildren, Juan Martinez, Javier Martinez, Wayne Tucker, Andrianna Tucker, Terri Ann Tracey, Thomas Tracey, Tyler James Akin; and 1 great-great-granddaughter, Alice; nephews and nieces, Mac Dean, Susan Meis, Rebecca Lynn Portillo, Allison Marsh and Paul McGhee.
The family extends a special note of appreciation to Bastrop Nursing Center and Argent Court for their love and care.
There will be a graveside service at 11:00am on Wednesday, May 26, 2021 at Austin Memorial Gardens.
