Mildred Pauline Wiles, 99, died peacefully on April 26, 2024 in Bastrop, Texas. Affectionally known as Millie and Mimi, she was born January 19, 1925 to Russian immigrants Annie and W.H. Novit. Mildred grew up in Dublin Texas, graduating from Dublin High School, then attended the University of Texas in Austin, where she received her Bachelor of Music Degree in theory and composition. She continued her graduate studies at Juilliard School of Music in New York.
While in Austin, she met her future husband, Jack Wiles, who was on weekend leave from boot camp near Austin prior to overseas deployment. After the war, they married in Dallas on September 22, 1946. They lived in Dallas and McKinney while Jack completed his medical education and internship, then moved to Tyler, where he established his medical practice. They reared their three children and were members of Congregation Beth El in Tyler. Mildred loved music and joined the East Texas Symphony, where she was the principal clarinetist for over 26 years. She was active in the musical life of the community, appearing in local recitals and performing with numerous chamber ensembles. Mildred also enjoyed art, and created paintings for many years. After Jack’s retirement, they enjoyed traveling throughout the US, where she often joined local music groups and performed at numerous outdoor concerts. After their travels, they lived in South Padre Island and then in Harlingen. After Jack’s death, she moved to Austin to be closer to family. Mildred will be remembered for always having a delicious meal and keeping everyone well fed.
