Richard M. Giro, Jr. entered into the arms of the Lord on December 3, 2024 at the age of 81 years, 11 months, and 24 days. He was affectionately known as the Snowcone man or Snowball man.
He was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. The first born child of Richard M. and Wilma (Scheffler) Giro. Following high school, Richard attended college in Texas, returning to Louisiana for a brief time and left again for Texas. He lived the remaining years of his life in Texas. He married Sandra Chromcak on December 15, 1990. They were married just short of 34 years.
Richard was active in his church. While attending Redeemer Lutheran Church, Austin, TX, he served as an Elder and multiple other positions as led by the spirit. In other congregations, he sang, read scripture, and volunteered his time and talents. His home congregation is Epiphany Lutheran Church, Bastrop, TX. He spent most of his adult life working with the United States Postal Service having retired with them after a long and successful career. He was an accomplished singer and dancer, an excellent bowler, a race car driver, and the owner and operator of the Snowball Express shaved ice stand. He loved kids and coached kids flag football and basketball teams. Richard participated in and directed the annual Easter Pageant held by the Lutheran Churches in the Austin area. He also worked with and led Lutheran Marriage Encounter sessions. Most of all, Richard was full of life and loved his God, his family, his work, his New Orleans culture, and anyone he happened to meet.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife Sandra Giro, his children, Daniel A. Giro and his wife Vicky, Matthew L. Kasper, and Shannon M. Kasper, his five grandchildren, two great granddaughters, his sister Elaine (McKinney), and two brothers Glenn and Merrill as well as nine cousins.
Services will be Saturday, December 14, 2024 at Our Savior Lutheran Church located at 1513 East Yager Lane Austin, Texas. Visitation will begin at 9:30am and Funeral services will begin at 10:30am. Richard’s Celebration of Life Service will be streamed. Graveside services will be at 2:30pm at Fairview Cemetery in Bastrop, Texas. Those wishing to make gifts in Richard’s memory are encouraged to donate to the cancer research charity of your choice or your local food bank.
